3300 年前の漢字の祖先「甲骨文字」では「純」を1と表し、金文(青銅器の銘文)
では23などと表す。この12の解釈は諸説あるが、その中では「春」の字34に
も使われており、草木が地上に出たばかりの葉や芽の形を表すという説が有力であ
る。とすれば、生まれたばかりの無垢な、即ち純粋なという意味になるのであろう。

The Character “Pure”
Ideogram
The early form of the character “pure” was scribed 3300 years ago in China on bones
and tortoise shells as in 1 and later on bronze ware as in 2and3. The interpretation
of 1and2varies but, the one insisting that it depicted the shapes of leaves and sprouts
coming afresh out of the ground is held most probable, for it is also used in the character
for “spring” as in 4and 5, which in turn verifies the meaning of the character as
“innocent ,newly born and pure.”
